London Swall'wing: Part I

How bad is the title of this post? It's pretty bad. Bad enough that I think I like it after all. And I thought about it for all of 2 seconds, which is, I'm sure, clear. Sorry. You deserve more.

It's also clear that eating foreign chocolate doesn't make me better at puns. Because if it did, this entry would feature some actually clever verbiage. You see, I've dug into the bag of snacks Dan brought back from his recent trip to London. And I started with the chocolate.

Mini Eggs Mini

So, are Cadbury Eggs not an Easter thing abroad? Because I would like to eat them all year. These Minis, too.

Bubbles Galaxy

A Galaxy Bubbles egg is like a Cadbury egg, but filled with aerated Galaxy chocolate. Galaxy is an international name for Dove chocolates.  "Bubbles" is a funny name for a candy bar, if you ask me, but the texture was quite nice, and its rich flavor almost suggests hazelnut.

So many of their snacks are lovely. Why is "The Only Way is Essex" so boring?

Bittersweet Bon Voyage

Sad Delicious

The other day, I had to say goodbye to Ms. Revelie, as well as to her mom and dad.  They're moving on to greener pastures (literally greener than NYC).  That they provided going-away goodies (mini chipwiches and fancied-up Two Bite brownies from Whole Foods) for our office before taking off didn't make their bittersweet farewell any more sweet than bitter.  But, as is my habit, I managed to eat through the pain.

Take care and fare well, friends!  Keep those baby pictures coming.

Chocolate for the Athletic Frog In You

Freddo
(nail polish = "Office" from American Apparel, another great gift)

Cadbury's Freddo makes me think, Froggy* Plays Tennis.

I found a little something strawberry inside this Australian frog, but it all tasted pretty artificial. Still, I'm not sorry I sampled it. Thanks, Cali!

p.s. Do frogs really taste like chicken? Anyone?

n.b. *Turns out, "Freddo" is a beloved character in his own right. And comes in numerous flavors.

Did I invent the pre-breakfast snack? I had another one.

Yodels

A package of Yodels = 3 Yodels.

1 1/2 Yodels got eaten immediately before breakfast.

Breakfast was some sort of organic Rice Krispies.

1 1/2 Yodels were eaten immediately after breakfast.

So, in a sense, I had a meal sandwiched by companion snacks.

p.s. I go through phases -- sometimes I think that Swiss Cake Rolls are better than Yodels. Other times I think Yodels kick Swiss Cake Rolls' li'l chocolate butts. I have never prefered Ho Hos. What do you think?

All swap and no flop.

Whoopie Pie

Smores Bar

Yesterday at lunch, Caitlin and I traded bites of each other's dessert from Paradis. I had a whoopie pie, while she chose a s'mores bar. Both were excellent, and good alternatives to the Paradis chocolate chip cookie, which I have said has seen better days. I'd like to see the s'mores bar, in particular, stay on the menu.

Happy Birthday, Rachel!

Coconut Cake - top

Sunday was Rachel's birthday. She's a woman who knows what she wants, and what she wants is to not make a big deal out of her birthday. But I couldn't help making a small-to-middling deal. After all, as a friend, she's a big deal to me.

The back story: a month or so ago, our mutual friend Stephen threw a party. One of the desserts featured there was a coconut cake he made from a Cooks Illustrated recipe. It was heavenly. Rachel raved about it, exchanged messages with me and Stephen about how to locate the recipe and the ingredients (creme of coconut can be a bit tricky to find), and even mentioned her love of it on the internet (I believe she said, "I dream of this cake" on Facebook). I thought it might make a good birthday present.

Coconut Cake - side

I spent early Sunday afternoon baking, toasting coconut, and creating the frosting, as well as putting everything together and cat-proofing the finished product. The cake was made of 2 round cakes cut in half horizontally, so it was a 4-layer cake with coconut buttercream frosting in between and on top. There were coconut creme and extract in the cake and the frosting, as well as toasted coconut throughout the icing, so I would call this triply coconut.

I'll make this admission: when I was making it, the buttercream frosting seemed to curdle, so that texture was a bit off, especially to the eye, but it still tasted delicious -- light and filled with coconut.

Rachel's cake - slice

Other than the buttercream fumble, this cake was spectacular on every level. I rarely use cake flour, but the recipe called for it and the result was a silky-smooth texture very pleasing in the mouth. It was perhaps not unlike eating an angel.

Rachel deserved no less a cake.

How to be a good sport

I'm back in Ritter Sport land.

Vice President

Some thoughts About Ritter Sport Yogurt:
1. I love the word Yaourt (it's French).
2. Although, "I'll be the judge of that," was my response to the packaging's claim that this flavor contains a "refreshing yogurt filling," it turned out to be true. But it's not refreshing in the sense of "thirst quenching" or "renewing your energy." It's refreshing like, "pleasingly different from what you've been eating."
3. Tangy!

President

Some thoughts about Ritter Sport Peppermint:
1. Hard to find.
2. This was a good Valentine's Day gift.
3. The peppermint flavor and scent are both a little sharp and the chocolate flavor is reminiscent of Oreos.
4. Filling: perfectly creamy!

I'm at your party, eating the Hostess.

Crumbs

Crumbs, a small bake shop that sells drinks (coffee, milk, sodas) and other baked goods as well as a coddle of cupcakes, has had a location on University between 13th and 14th for a few months, the guy working the counter told me, but I didn't discover it until I got a tip from Ian (regarding free samples of Heath Bar cupcake) yesterday.

Cupcake case

The cupcakes are pricy ($3.75 for most) but large and tempting. I resisted the peanut butter cup flavor (don't want to be too predictable) and went for the Hostess.

Hostess

As I hoped, there was cream inside - and a goodly amount of it, too.

Pantsing the cupcake

More importantly, the bakery seems to be working from a good recipe. The cupcake itself was moist and had a nice, full chocolate flavor.

Here be cupcake

To stretch my dollar, someone is getting a Christmas present wrapped in this bag.
