Afeared

Weird

I was too scared to try these.  Or maybe "worried and suspicious" would be more accurate than "scared."

Since when can one buy cheesy fries at Burger King, anyway?  If it's not for sale at the "restaurant," why brand it and sell it at the bodega?

Birthday Fish-a-ma-jig

Happy Birthday, Cali!

My sister's birthday was a few weeks ago, and it was in her honor that I had a McDonalds Filet-O-Fish sandwich for dinner that day.  Above is the photo I sent her to prove it.

You might remember my sister, Cali, from her guest post about her law school food storage habits.  It's worth reading.  Eventually, I wrote its sister post (zing!) about my own fridge-full of food.

Anyway, Cali and I both have a taste for the sandwich above, which she and a friend call the "fish-a-ma-jig."  I eat one as a guilty pleasure every month or two, but only enjoy it if it's JUST out of the fryer.  Even then, if it's not eaten quickly, the last corner bite tastes sort of dreary and cold, so I don't linger. My favorite part?  Oozing tartar sauce.  I know this will gross some of you out, but I strive for honesty in these posts. And I like sauces.

Happy Birthday, Cali!  Here's to another year of occasional fish-a-ma-jigs.  My wish for you is that this next year will also find you living with a fully stocked fridge (she graduated from law school, folks! AND got a job!).  It's good to share this guilty pleasure with you.

A measure of my hunger:

Peeps'll cut you.

I ate two whole Peeps.  And I don't even really like Peeps.  I love marshmallows, yes, but not the sugar-crunchy coating on these chicks.

But I was so hungry!

Enrobement: It's what makes raisins tolerable.

I can eat raisins.

Suggested Use-By Holiday

St Patrick's Day and every day.

On St. Patrick's Day, I bought the last carton of Mint Chocolate Chip at the corner store. It didn't turn out to be green, but it did seem an appropriate flavor. As a nod to the drunken drunkenness going on at bars around the nation, I ate some for dessert with a little Bailey's poured over the top (not my idea). Unfortunately, all we had in the cabinet was caramel Bailey's. Weird. But I ate it. I am nothing if not a slave to thematic-slash-edible follow-through.

Just as I suspected, this ice cream (without topping) is still good long after the holiday. I ate more straight from the carton last night, to preserve resources. Washing a bowl wastes water, right?

If there's a bottom, I haven't hit it.

If there's a bottom, I haven't hit it.

Yes, I will snack on generic sliced pickles. Actually, this has been a tradition of mine since childhood, when my friends in the neighborhood and I used to sneak into the church basement (my dad was the pastor there) to snitch hamburger slices out of the (not-very-well-stocked) refrigerator in the fellowship hall.

The first one out of the jar still tastes like rebellion.

Angela, I finally tried them! Here's proof!

Durian Chips

Oh, Angela, you've been so patient. I'm sorry it took me this long to get a little tipsy and try the durian chips you sent me. Did you have some? They taste/feel like sweet french fried onions. And they smell like weirdsville. Thanks!

You can lead a horse to raisins...

But I don't like raisins

but you can't convince that horse she likes raisins. Even if she's eating really good raisin bread.

The cinnamon raisin nut (walnut?) bread Nicole brought to share at work smelled heavenly, especially after a slice or two got toasted. Folks gathered 'round.

"I don't even like raisins," I said again and again, eating a piece with butter, "but this is good."

I have heard that Orwasher's, the bakery from which this bread originated, is "hit or miss." This item's a hit. I should know. I don't like raisins.
