Good News!

Bluebottle S'more

Not only does my pediatrician give out delicious lollipops, but her office is located right around the corner from this.

My only issue with this Blue Bottle Coffee s'more was that the "fancy" graham crackers don't really make it better.  They do, however, make it more portable.  So go ahead, y'all.

Back on the (Baking) Horse

The breastfeeding demands of a newborn have left me little time to execute recipes these past three weeks.  Luckily, my husband is perfectly capable (and willing) in the kitchen.  I have not gone hungry.

The other day, though, I really craved homemade cookies, and I managed to eke out enough time to make (and, dare I say, improve upon) this recipe between a couple of Sebastian's naps.

In a radical sort of mood, I found some mini marshmallows, rolled them into the cookie dough, made larger balls than called for, and baked each dozen for about 13-14 minutes.

They were delicious! Dan and I ripped through them in about 3 days, and I'm itching to make more.

A measure of my hunger:

Peeps'll cut you.

I ate two whole Peeps.  And I don't even really like Peeps.  I love marshmallows, yes, but not the sugar-crunchy coating on these chicks.

But I was so hungry!

Marshmallow snacks with jelly in the middle are good. My favorite flavor is grape, but Hello Kitty strawberry chocolate is also quite nice. Thanks, Paul!

Part Two: The day gets nicer.

Mid-afternoon

Need to perk up after a disappointing baked potato? A "Marshmallow Dream Bar" is basically Starbucks' version of a Rice Krispie Treat. If it's a hot day, try a lemonade mixed with unsweetened Tazo Passion tea (or black or green tea). I mean, my potato was pretty disappointing, so in retrospect I probably could have used two of the marshmallow treats, but you do what you can.

Some like it stale.

Peeps

I don't love Peeps (give me a plain old marshmallow, any day), but if I am going to eat one or two I prefer them fresh. I know many people who open the package and leave their Peeps alone for a few days in order to let them get stale before they're eaten.

What's your pleasure?

p.s. I've got some Cadbury Eggs in my freezer, but otherwise I did not stock up on Easter candy this year. I didn't plan it that way; it just happened. I did have some SweetTart jellybeans at work last week. I'm not a jellybean fan, but they were good.

The Silent Snackstress

While browsing vintage cookbooks on Ebay (trying to look-but-not-buy), I ran across one from the early 1930s titled, The Silent Hostess. Produced by General Electric, I expect that the "silent" to this book is the silence of G.E. appliances, and that it's not a treatise on why the woman throwing the party should keep quiet, but the title made me wonder what I might serve at a "silence" themed dinner party. I mean that the food would need to be silent, not the guests (or the host/ess). Nothing crunchy or crispy or that needs to be sawed into with knives and forks. Still, you'd want enough variation in flavor and texture that dinner guests don't feel like they're eating an institutional dinner for the infirm. And I'd hope everyone would wear muted colors and soft-soled shoes.

As a silent snack, the marshmallow is a revelation, if not particularly healthy. I like a jumbo Jet-Puffed with a smear of peanut butter on top. But if you're more of a jelly lover than a p.b. fan, why not go with these?

Grape Marshmallows

There's jelly in them thar marshmallows. Grape jelly.

Grape? Grape.

I like that they're individually wrapped because it increases portability (and because of this they don't stick together in lumps or go stale like other bags of marshmallows can). They have a pleasant, powdery sweetness that soothes the palate and neither too much nor too little of the jelly filling. The marshmallows used in these treats might even taste better (leaving aside the probably artificial grapeness inside) than the plain, bagged variety available everywhere. I'd buy these unfilled, too, if that were an option, and put them in dark chocolate cocoa.

Want to go wild? PBJ marshmallow (one of these with a little peanut butter on top). Or two held together with peanut butter spread in between. Why not?!
