Do it with Relish

Green Tomato Relish ingredients

What's the season for green tomatoes around here, anyway? If you see them for sale in NYC, let me know. I have my grandfather's green tomato relish recipe to perfect, but I'm afraid I won't get my chance until August or so. Every year I miss them and have to make do with partly green. No more!

A peach of a chutney of a peach.

Cheddar and cayenne buttermilk biscuits

I like butter and jelly on plain biscuits, but wondered what I could add that would moisten these cheddar and cayenne buttermilk biscuits but wouldn't be overpowered by cheese or a little spice?

My solution was hot peach chutney. It had just the right heat and wetness, with a hint of sweet peach.

Also. If I were this girl's mother, I would be squeezing her for days. As it is, I'm tickled pink she exists.

We didn't write "We Didn't Start the Fire."

But at some point in 1995, we wrote the following "poem:"

shalom
malomar
incense
salad bar

ravioli
davenport
nested table
food court

egg rolls
turkey dogs
finesse
wooden clogs

lazy Susan
ketchup bottle
plain yogurt
full throttle

Yes, I had a long often-rhyming-but-never-capitalized-experimental-poetry phase.

I believe these verses remain open to a number of interesting interpretations.

Olivia Newton-Cream Cheese

temp tee

The cream cheese tub at work today (Mondays and Thursdays are bagel days) was too cute. It's like I can have a little bit of the Eighties on my bagel. It's spreadable headbands and legwarmers and aerobics and Tab.

It's not just the design, either. The name kills me with adorable.

Go on, temp tee. Tempt me!

p.s. I have got to get Punky Brewster on DVD.

A taste of honey

If you found this in my cupboard you might be tempted to throw it out. No, no, silly. It's still good.

Until this year I'd never bought raw honey. Oh, I'd had "honey." I'd had the stuff in the bear...and the stuff you can buy in a jar and pour into the bear once you've used up the original bear honey and washed out the bear. I probably even tried a bite of honeycomb in my grade school days, but it didn't occur to me that one could get raw honey at the store, keep it in one's cupboard, and eat it all one likes.

Raw honey is expensive. I found mine at Whole Foods and spent a few moments looking at the price tag and thinking about whether I should risk it. But the jar holds over 2 lbs of the stuff and it's lasting for months and months. And, as it turns out, the flavor is simply worth it (though it may seem an acquired taste to those used to milder, processed honey). It's strong, sweet, viscous gold.

This honey is pesticide free, unheated and unstrained. It's got pollen, propolis, honeycomb, and live enzymes. That translates to a layer of crunchy bits on the top. What's underneath is thick and rich and smooth.

Really yum.

Eat a spoonful. Have it in your tea. Drizzle it on your corn bread or biscuits. Use it in baking. Wash your face in it. Or think it's gross and leave it all for me. I don't mind.

I'm never going back to the bear.

My so-called snacks

reference

I borrowed DVDs of My So-Called Life from Steph. What can I say? The show speaks to me:

"The only really great foods are appetizers and desserts, so why bother eating anything else?" My sentiments exactly. Fried apple pies, anyone?

Fried Apple Pies -- Batch #2

Also: "So, who's into the mustard? You know what that's about. Sex. I mean, all you really need to survive is mild yellow. All this other stuff is purely recreational." I am guilty of recreational mustard:

10 mustards

And: "Refrigerators are so revealing. I can look in this refrigerator and know, like, everything about your family." We've already looked into mine. Yikes.
