And if there's fur in my milk...

Look at meee.

Is it snack time or pet the cat time?

Opinions differ.

p.s. Peanut Butter Creme Double Stuf Oreos? Like darker, creamier chocolate Nutter Butters. What delicious genius. I've never appreciated the chocolate cookies that make up the outside of an Oreo as much as I do with this version. Still, these don't seem like they've been doubly stuffed. They are Regular Stuf, if you ask me.

The crabby still snack.

Lemon Mints ingredients

Temper your next not-so-sunny mood with oil of lemon and Yellow 5 Lake.

Lemon Mints

Glancing at the shape, I thought this package was going to contain some sort of gum, but inside are "mints." That's what it says on the wrapper. They don't taste"minty," though. These are slightly chalky, milky yellow (with brown speckles), lemon flavored thin wafers (a little thinner and smaller than a Scrabble tile, perhaps).

They taste like essence of lemon bar and chew easily if one tires of sucking on them. They will be cheerful even when you are not.

Brought to you by the letter Obama

I had this kooky notion that my eating today should focus on foods shaped like the letter O or whose names start with the letter O.

That meant: oatmeal with brown sugar; caramel popcorn rice cakes with peanut butter; Annie's P'Sghetti Loops; Crash-Hot Potatoes with scallions; Baked Brie with Caramelized Peaches; olives stuffed with feta cheese; an orange; and Brown Rice Snaps (cheddar flavor) crackers.

Oh yum. But gets cold fast.

Needs more gluten.

Too sweet.

Oh, yeah. I also absent-mindedly ate some licorice while tidying my bag. Oops.

Poetry Tuesday: Indigestion Nation

I do not deserve these two doughnuts for voting,
These Boston Kreme doughnuts,
These bolsters of sweet.
I do not deserve this large smoothie for waiting,
This Peach Pleasure smoothie,
This vessel of chill.
I am nervously sipping on cream-heavy polls;
I am gingerly resting on peach-flavored pins.

I am wistfully biting my lip into shreds
And consuming desserts that I do not deserve
Because I deserve them,
Food's dim rooms and blankets.
I'm tacos and hot wings and cheddar cheese chips.
I'm butternut squash and dark chocolate with ginger
Till somebody wins.
Until somebody wins.

p.s. I am OUTRAGED that Whole Foods on 14th Street has stopped serving smoothies. Jamba Juice does not cut it.

A fresh start.

It's the rare snacking political metaphor! In short: I endorse voting tomorrow (if you're eligible). Freshen the breath of our nation, already.

Smalls

Our relationship with other countries hasn't always left a clean taste in my mouth.

Mintia

Be vigilant. The small vote can be mighty. Demand yours be counted and consumed.

Mystery mints

Seriously. Let's vote! I like a candidate who is strong, sharp, and whose ideas taste clean.

I found all these mints languishing in Snack Jail. It's sad, really. I just haven't been in a minty mood. Maybe on Wednesday...

Cadbury and Cadbury

I found a few chocolate items from Anastasia's UK Snack Sampler rattling around in the back of the refrigerator (placed there on a very hot day because I was afraid they were melting at room temperature), so Dan and I tried them on our way home from Cold Spring on the train this weekend. Any blur in these photos is actually moving-train atmosphere, not blur. Got that?

Cadbury Flake bills itself as "The Crumbliest, Flakiest Milk Chocolate." That's accurate; it's not the least messy snack on a train. Inside the wrapper is a twig-like stick of chocolate. It looks like it is layers of chocolate folded back on itself, whorled almost like wood. This is milk chocolate throughout. There's nothing in the middle but more chocolate. No "center," no "crunchies," no nuts. It tastes a bit like Easter chocolate melted down and re-cast.

Flake wasn't bad at all, but I enjoyed the Cadbury Fudge more. When I broke the bar in half it bent before breaking, rather than snapping. "Feels fudgey," I decided. Inside is a sweet, dense, lighter colored fudge filling. Dan identified the flavor as similar to Rolos. There's a caramel "thing" going on there, though the texture is more like fudge than chewy or sticky caramel. I just ate 4-5 pieces of homemade peanut butter chocolate double-decker fudge a few nights ago, so I know fudge. This bar isn't quite being straight with me - it's more like an imitation of fudge, but it's pretty tasty for a candy bar.

Halloween Preparedness

Magritte from the side

On a night when there is a lot of candy consumed (traditionally), it seems smart to incorporate a healthy snack into one's costume.

Another excellent idea I witnessed but didn't get a photo of was Sarah as a French woman with a fresh-looking baguette of bread at her side. Beyond the snacking possibilities, she got extra points for being one of the brave who carry props in hand as part of their costumes. It is a little inconvenient, and as such suggests a level of dedication to the look.

Hats (adorned with apples) off to you both!
