Poetry Tuesday: Talk To Me, Yan Yan by Meiji

Yan Yan

Here's a normal golden egg,
Mostly golden, not quite gold,
Owl-faced, moony-eyed, and
Short on gumption, pride, and light.
Kokekokko no! That's me not being chicken.
Animal instinct's the tallest mammal
And I've lucky-numbered pieces here.
8 inches of snail mail makes for a slow ride.

So - love it on the pale bakery tip.
Not love, love. I'm in like. Like this. It's
OK to try to gallop, girl, astride a
Crispy kinda cracker stick. We're
Stuck and thin, a skinny swim
In -- sorta chocolate cream to dip.
Butter me up, herbivores. Meet me so
I'm sugar light. But then
Think big and bigger, more:
Sweeten me there, chocolate-like.
Meet me back in.
I'm more active at night.

Good News!

Bluebottle S'more

Not only does my pediatrician give out delicious lollipops, but her office is located right around the corner from this.

My only issue with this Blue Bottle Coffee s'more was that the "fancy" graham crackers don't really make it better.  They do, however, make it more portable.  So go ahead, y'all.

Subway Snack

Platform crackers

These animal crackers were a closing-night gift from Averyn, a fellow cast member in Field 309, the play I just wrapped. I ate them while waiting for a train.

Question: How long have these been branded "Barnum's?" I've never thought about that before.

Answer: Since 1902! [source: Wikipedia]

Poetry Tuesday: Bon Appetite [sic]

Leaning Tree Sexy Olives cropped

[Here's a puzzle of a poem (puzzling in part because I no longer remember why I wrote it) from over ten years ago. It's young and indignant and not as deep as I imagine I thought it was when I wrote it, but I offer it now in its original form, olives and all, because you deserve to have a tangentially food-related Poetry Tuesday again after all this time.  Also, have I ever eaten salmon florets?!]

Bon Appetite [sic/k]
words mean something.
words, mean, still emit -- and might mean lips express.

How dying is language, simplified and shaved.
Tongues empty, witless words don't quench these thirsts.
Dining on air, my thoughts turn to once redwood-hearty martyrs of vocabulary,
long-forgotten forests of phrasing as disappeared as ghosts
and only present as memory here, where each course of conversation
serves up newly misspoken delicacies and pairs the pungent, distinct flavors
of meaty meaning with the wrong wines.

Once, when someone's cruel teeth bit down a sturdy word,
a tree of meaning, or a grove of language tumbled slashed-and-burned
tall or strong or slender as its syllables designed,
axing out the sense of wood and sap
and spitting slivers from the oral mill as waste,
replanting followed; so language grew in its season
and tall at its leisure
and rich in its flavor.

Once.

But here has been eaten a meal which is misunderstood
and the real taste of each course, artful and distinct as salmon florets,
lies undigested in your gut, unsavored, where words sadly mean something.

They silently mean something.

(And the olive on a saltine you
toss the guests who attempt your
conversation goes unnoticed as
the pale, sprouty shadow
of the oak you ripped up
to make one, mispronounced
toothpick.)

Maundy, Maundy

Maundy Thursday matzoh

I attended a Maundy Thursday service last night. We observed communion using giant sheets of matzoh, but I broke off and ate only a small piece with my sip of wine/apple juice (I chose apple juice).

Dry and bland though it was, I just couldn't bear to throw away my uneaten polygon of matzoh square at the end of the service. I stuck the remainder in my bag and finished it at Peter's art opening.

Cheez-Whats?

New?

I'm not suggesting that Parmesan & Garlic Cheez-Its would be anywhere near as good as my favorite Hot & Spicy Green Tabasco flavor, but I was intrigued by this display.

I'd never seen or heard of the Parmesan & Garlic variety before (these were spotted at a Giant Eagle in Pittsburgh, PA). Has anyone tried them?

Part Three: And, finally!

Needed that.

Marshmallow Dream Bar and Iced Tea/Lemonade not fixing your wagon (the wagon that broke under the curse of a paltry potato)? What you REALLY need is to collapse on the couch with two packets of Green Tabasco Cheez-Its and a David Sedaris book.

That's better.

Poetry Tuesday 4/14/09: The Do-Over.

Matzoh

[Due to a wilderness issue (as in, I was in a wilderness), this poem could not be posted on Tuesday (see these posts). All due apologies.]

Chocolate Caramel Matzoh Career Paths

Matzoh millionaire
No flat cracker tax!
Dipped twice in caramel gold
And chocolate's dark coins

Matzoh model
Wafer thin and brittle unclothed
Snaps less easily when dressed
In sweet, candied fashion

Matzoh Emcee
Jokes classically, if slightly stale
Thick, glossiest hair style
Unmoved by applause.

A No-Brainer

Enrobing

It took very little time or effort to dip Ritz Bits Cracker Sandwiches (Peanut Butter) in chocolate.

It took even less time or effort to eat them all.

I meant to make these for the Cookie Party in December but ran out of time. My guests' loss was certainly my gain. Thanks, Mom, for sharing the idea with me!

A tip or two:
Milk chocolate (melted mini Hershey's Kisses) did not set up as well as the melted white chocolate chips, but a few hours in the refrigerator evened things up. White was my favorite; milk chocolate was Dan's. Also, chopsticks are excellent enrobement utensils.

Snacks I Found in Bowls at Work Today

Gum I found

Gum (Winter Fresh is my favorite flavor of Extra, except for when I prefer the original pink kind). However -- who puts gum in a bowl? This is not a rhetorical question. I would like to know.

Fish of Gold

Goldfish Crackers (Not shown: bowl).

Like chalk and cheese

You'll never make it to Prospect Park

Cheese cracker hierarchy:

Cheez-It Hot & Spicy (green Tabasco flavor) - 10/10 **Champion!**
Cheez-It (original) - 9/10
Cheez-It White Cheddar - 7/10
Cheese Nips - 4/10
Krasdale Cheese Crackers eaten in the car on the way to Sarah's birthday picnic in Prospect Park - 1/10

In Krasdale's (partial) defense, I notice that the crackers expire next month, which probably means this box was really old. But that's no excuse for them tasting like cardboard. Seriously.

Also, as Tim pointed out: Why are Cheese Nips so prevalent in NYC if everyone we know agrees that Cheez-Its are far superior?

Cheese it! It's the cops! Let's get out of here.
