When the chips are brown

Chocolate tortilla chips

Attention everyone who knew of the existence of chocolate tortilla chips but did not tell me about them:

Shame on you! Didn't you know I'd be into the idea?

Not too sweet, these are from FoodShouldTasteGood and contain Dutch cocoa, cane sugar, and sea salt. They are "rich and savory," as claimed on the back of the bag. I tried them with vanilla yogurt, with peanut butter, and with salsa. Thumbs up to all three combinations (and to them eaten plain). They are casual enough for every day, but because each is large and rectangular when unbroken, a selection of the chips would make a pretty dessert on a platter, too.

Who will help me find Tim Tams?

I need to try this.

Is this cornucopia a little heavy on the bananas?

Cornucopia

Or is it just me?

Gobbled.

Walk the Line

Another day; another potluck.

Today was the annual Thanksgiving Shared Meal at church. I had but a paltry plate and a half of food, yet was stuffed so full I feel I must have waddled home. What a way to kick off this holiday season of eating.

Plate 1

I was feeling good about my plate (knowing I'd saved a little room for dessert) when I realized there was a second, smaller table filled with salads and more sides. Eep.

This is an occasion on which you are better off skipping the bread (and I'm a plate mopper from a young age).

Plate 2

As for those desserts, I stayed away from the pie, figuring I'd have plenty of that in a few days. Instead, I went for the cheesecake and peanut-butter related items. This second plate also contains a few stray salads.

Peanut Butter Devil

I could eat only half of an amazing, thick, peanut-butter mousse-y sort of tart or cheesecake piled with white chocolate chips, peanut butter chips, and chopped peanut butter cups(with Oreo crust). My heart said, "Take a whole one," but reason prevailed.

Fini

The last bite is the hardest.

Salmon I am.

The goods.

Bagels: The Bagel Store (JalapeƱo-Cheddar may be the best).

Cream Cheese: Krasdale (cheap and fine).

Salmon: Northwest Gourmet Smoked King Salmon Fillet from Rachel (brought back from WA). Looks like cat food; tastes like salmon. Not bad at all! Quite salty, but that went well with the mildness of the cream cheese.

Pepper: Freshly ground (fewer flyspecks that way).

Salmon, I am.

Oh! Yakitori!

Yakitori Oh! Taisho

I had a dinner full of snacks at Yakitori Oh! Taisho at 9 St. Marks Place earlier this evening.

We ordered the "B" sampler of yakitori and other skewered foods, rock shrimp with a mayonnaise-y sauce, squid, some kind of potato pancake piled with fish flakes, and more. My favorite items were the chicken meatballs (tsukune - at the far right in the picture above), the rolled scallions (also on skewers - at the far left in the picture), and the "spicy fried chicken" (not spicy at all, but hot and crispy and flavorful with a spritz of lemon - not pictured).

I also drank beer, which I never do (except in foreign countries), and hardly minded. The food was that good.

Some of us aren't eating solids yet (except for gnawing on fingers) but found the menu intriguing anyway.

The substance of snacks hoped for, the evidence for snacks unphotographed.

Cake from Matt

This is half of one of several giant slices of chocolate cake that showed up at work a few days ago. Turns out they were left over from Matt C.'s roommate's birthday. I wish I could remember the bakery's name so that I could insist that the New Yorkers among you could try some for yourself. It was moist, rich, and satisfying.

UPDATE: Matt says the cake was from The Chocolate Room (269 Court St., Cobble Hill). The lucky duck has one more piece to eat today.

That cake led to memories of another slice. On Sunday, I met Kate at La Lanterna di Vittorio in Greenwich Village for some fireside catching up. I didn't have my camera with me, but when they told me they were out of bread pudding I opted for the Chocolate Mudd Cake. Wow. Gooey and sweet without being cloying, it paired perfectly with a steamed almond milk. I couldn't have been happier (unless I'd been a little closer to the fireplace), despite not having my camera with me to capture the cake's beauty.

Speaking of snacks unphotographed, yesterday Nick brought extra leftovers to work with me in mind and offered to share. I am sincerely honored when someone thinks of me while eating something delicious - especially when that person bequeaths to me a portion of the leftovers. Nick's gift was a serving of broccoli with a shalloty, garlicky, marvel of a cream sauce. The kicker? Crushed Cheetos sprinkled on top. Truly awesome, it was, and deftly made (by Nick). I'd left my camera at home, but that diminished my pleasure in the green and orange side dish exactly none.
